The hymn of Phil. 2.6-11, therefore, is about the contrast of the two Adams: the first man and the last Adam. As such, it leads to conclusions like Jesus never claimed to be pre-existent Creator (he qualifies the Gospel of John as a later theological reflection, and not a historical tradition that goes back to Jesus himself).

When it is said God assumed human nature in the form of Jesus Christ, one is naturally inclined to wonder how Christ’s divinity can be understood in relation to his humanity. Because the second person of the Trinity had the same personal substance as the incarnated Jesus, they are identical persons. Its importance can be noted when Ksemann's challenge was taken up by representatives of both Catholicism and Protestantism. 36 In the present emphasis on the historical quest for Jesus the liberal research into the life of Jesus of the 19th century is a lost cause.
